Mundak Upanishad, is
a part of the "Atharvaveda" - one of the 4 vedas. As per mythology,
it is said to have been bestowed by Lord Brahma to Atharva - his
Eldest son. The name of this "Upanishad" has been derived from the
word "Mund", which literally means "to Shave". Accordingly, this
Upanishad is supposed to remove ignorance.
This Upanishad is in the form of a "Mantra" or "Shlok", and divided
into three chapters. Each of these chapters is known as a "Mundak".
The Sub-section of these chapters is called a "Khanda". Total
numbers of verses in the Upanishad are 64.
Mundak Upanishad delivers a sermon that there are two types of
knowledge (Vidya). The first one is the higher class of knowledge,
which is known as "Paara Vidya". Traditionally, this is recommended
for the class of "Brahmans" only. "Apaara Vidya" is the second type
of knowledge, which is graded lower then first one. This is
recommended for the Physical world. It has all the knowledge
evaluated and collected by human beings, like, phonetics, grammar,
and etymology. All the teachings of "Veda" are also included in "Apaara
Vidya"; only the true knowledge of Supreme Being is "Paara Vidya".
It deals with the concept of origination of "Universe" from an
unmanifested source.
